Steins;Gate follows Rintarô Okabe, an eccentric and paranoid 18-year-old scientist, self-proclaimed "Mad Scientist", who operates from his Future Gadget Laboratory in Akihabara. Together with his friends, he inadvertently turns a microwave into a device capable of sending text messages to the past. Seeking to understand this phenomenon, they carry out various experiments on time travel, before quickly being tracked down by SERN, which is conducting its own research on the subject.
