Chapter 16 — Episode 16

First, the episode opens with Kokyo declaring Senku the new chief of Ishigami Village, after which Senku realizes that the village's name and his own name being identical is no coincidence. Ruri reveals that Senku's name appears as the 100th story in the priestess's oral tradition — a collection of tales passed down through generations to preserve knowledge — and Senku deduces that this explains why the villagers know of animals and fairy tales from the old world. Then, the narrative shifts into a flashback told through Ruri's "100 Stories," depicting Senku's father Byakuya in the present-day world. A young Senku is shown as a curious child obsessed with science, while Byakuya, a failed astronaut candidate, receives a new JAXA recruitment notice. The flashback follows Byakuya as he successfully joins a space mission and docks with the International Space Station, where he meets the crew: cosmonauts Yakov and Darya, engineer Shamil, NASA scientist Connie, and famous pop singer Lillian Weinberg, who paid $50 million for a space tourism seat. The crew bonds warmly, with Byakuya sharing ramen he brought from a restaurant he frequented with Senku, and Lillian confiding that she hopes her music inspires people the way it once inspired her. Finally, a mysterious light flashes over the Earth, and the crew loses all contact with the ground — NASA, Roscosmos, and amateur radio all go silent simultaneously. Checking a live camera feed, they discover that humanity has been turned to stone. Byakuya declares that they are the last six humans alive and, rather than waiting for rescue, resolves that they must return to Earth to save all of humanity.
