Chapter 18 — Episode 18

Frieren and her companions — Fern and Stark — travel toward Oysarst, the largest magic city in the northern countries, where Frieren must obtain a first-class mage license to gain entry into the Northern Plateau. First, during their journey, Frieren explains to Fern that a mage's strength is not determined by magical power alone, but also by skill, experience, effort, and talent, noting that she herself has been defeated eleven times by mages with less magical power than her. Then, the group stops to rest near the border of Count Granart's territory, where they encounter bandits and are joined by two new characters: the mage Ubel and the warrior monk Kraft, who are also heading to Oysarst for the first-class mage exam. Later, the group arrives at the Continental Magic Association's Northern Branch, where the first test of the exam is explained by first-class examiner Genau, and the candidates are transported to the Grop Basin for the practical portion. At the end of the episode, a subplot follows two other exam candidates — Lavine and her partner — as Lavine encourages her timid companion to push through her fears, and the partner reveals to Frieren an interesting observation that Frieren believes could be key to capturing the target Shtille in the upcoming trial.
