Sousou no Frieren Season 1

Chapter 28 — Episode 28

The episode opens with the first-class mage exam's interview phase, where the examiner Macht evaluates each candidate one by one. He passes several notable figures, including Denken the Imperial Mage, a mage who participated via a magical double while relaxing at home, Wirbel the captain of the Northern Magic Corps, and Fern, who identifies herself as Frieren's apprentice. Each candidate is judged on their character, instincts, and attitude rather than a conventional test. Then, during the privilege-granting ceremony, Macht shares his personal motivation for becoming a first-class mage: he seeks a powerful spell to kill more demons, inspired by the humble, everyday acts of kindness performed by Himmel the Hero in his remote northern village. A flashback reveals Frieren's own memory of Himmel insisting on helping ordinary people during their journey, even when she questioned the value of such trivial deeds. Frieren is notably banned from entering Serie's domain, preventing her from accompanying her companions to receive their privileges. Finally, the group prepares to leave Äußerst, with Fern revealing she used her privilege to obtain a legendary laundry spell, which Frieren proudly approves of. Stark bids farewell to the townspeople who have grown fond of him, and the party says goodbye to their fellow examinees, including those who failed and plan to retry in three years. As they depart, Frieren reflects on Himmel's philosophy of easy, unsentimental farewells, recalling his words that tearful goodbyes are unnecessary as long as the journey continues and reunions remain possible.
