Chapter 5 — Episode 5

The episode opens with a brief vision of Frieren's future goal: reaching Aureole, the land where souls rest, where she speaks with her former comrades including Himmel. In this vision, Himmel reflects that their ten-year adventure — though only one-hundredth of Frieren's long life — was the half of Fern's life, and that it changed Frieren nonetheless. The scene then shifts to 28 years after Himmel's death, where Frieren and Fern say farewell to the dying Heiter before heading north through the Wille Region. First, Frieren and Fern arrive near a mountain pass where villagers warn them of disappearances caused by ghost-like apparitions resembling deceased loved ones. Investigating, they discover a demon named Macht is using illusions drawn from victims' memories to lure and trap them. The demon conjures an illusion of Heiter to manipulate Fern, and then one of Himmel to target Frieren, but Frieren resists and defeats him, declaring the pass safe. Then, the two travel to Riegel Canyon, where Frieren spots a coveted grimoire in a solar dragon's nest. Their attempt to fight the dragon fails and they are forced to flee. Macht — revealed to be a separate character, a warrior's master — directs them to a nearby village to recruit his apprentice Stark as a vanguard. Finally, Stark confesses he is actually a coward who never truly fought the dragon, but Frieren, having learned from Macht that Stark overcame his past cowardice, gives him one night to decide whether to join their journey north.
